Kick off your spring show season with the Garden State Horse Show, New Jersey' s US Equestrian National, A-rated horse show held at The Ridge at Riverview, featuring a full schedule of classes from lead line to equitation, hunters and jumpers, it features classics, hunter derbies, including a USHJA National Hunter Derby.

The Garden State Horse Show begins with two days of unrated showing to warm up and prepare for a week of “A” National competition with a full complement of divisions.

Feature classes include:

$7,500 Ted Grant Welcome Stake

$5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby

$2,500 Garden State Hunter Derby

$2,500 High Child/Adult Jumper Classic

$1,500 Low Child/Adult Jumper Classic

The Junior Essex Troop held its first horse show in 1951. The one-day show became a three-day show and was the largest all-junior horse show on the East Coast. It became known as the Garden State Horse Show. In 1989 the show expanded to a five-day event, open to both junior and adult riders, and grew to be the largest AA-rated hunter/jumper horse show in New Jersey.

In 2011, the 60th Anniversary of the Garden State Horse Show, the show expanded again to include the Garden State Preview Show. The seven days of competition held over two weeks, draws as many as 1,500 exhibitors and over 1,000 spectators.

The Garden State Horse Show moved to the United States Equestrian Team Foundation headquarters at Hamilton Farm in Gladstone, New Jersey in 2019.

In 2020, the Garden State Horse Show moved to The Ridge at Riverview in scenic Asbury, NJ.

Over the years many international and Olympic athletes have competed at the Garden State Horse Show. Competitors include Olympic gold medalists McLain Ward and Chris Kappler, Olympic silver medalists Anne Kursinski and Peter Leone.

The Junior Essex Troop of Cavalry was founded in 1931 as a cadet auxiliary with the support and aid of the famous Essex Troop of the 102nd Cavalry, New Jersey National Guard. It was the only junior cavalry squadron sanctioned by the United States Government.

In 1943, the Junior Essex Troop was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with the mission to “foster the love of horses among boys” through military training and education in the art of horsemanship. The Troop became co-ed in 1983, developing and educating young men and women through equine activities. Though the Troop ceased daily operations in 1989.
